4 trillion yuan—a new historical high! The State Grid’s “15th Five-Year” investment plan has been released.

On January 15, reporters learned from State Grid Corporation of China that during the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the corporation’s fixed-asset investment is expected to reach 4 trillion yuan, representing a 40% increase over the 14th Five-Year Plan period. This expansion of effective investment will drive high-quality development of the new power system’s industrial and supply chains.
During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the State Grid will focus on achieving the country’s nationally determined contribution targets for emissions reduction, and will see an average annual increase of approximately 200 million kilowatts in installed capacity of wind and solar new energy sources within its service area. This will help raise the share of non-fossil fuel consumption to 25% and increase the proportion of electricity in final energy consumption to 35%. The company will optimize the layout of pumped-storage hydropower stations, support the large-scale development of new energy storage technologies, and enhance the capacity to support the operation of new energy sources and facilitate their integration into the grid. Additionally, the company will support the construction of zero-carbon factories and zero-carbon industrial parks, meet the connectivity needs of 35 million charging facilities, and further boost the electrification level of end-use energy consumption.
Major infrastructure such as the power grid serves as the foundation for economic and social operations. During the 15th Five-Year Plan period, the State Grid will preliminarily establish a new-type grid platform featuring coordinated operation among transmission, distribution, and microgrids, further strengthening the energy transmission network of “power from the west to the east and power from the north to the south.” The construction of ultra-high-voltage direct-current transmission channels will be accelerated, and inter-regional and inter-provincial transmission capacity will increase by more than 30% compared to the end of the 14th Five-Year Plan period.
State Grid Corporation will continue to play its role as a “stabilizer” and “ballast” for the national economy. Through sustained, high-intensity investments, it will accelerate the construction of a new-type power grid platform—underpinned by a robust main grid and distribution network, and complemented by smart microgrids—thus fully safeguarding national energy security and making new and greater contributions to speeding up the development of a new energy system and fully building China into an energy powerhouse.
