From the development trend of green power system to see the new demand growth point of transformer

New Trend of Green Power

Pan Yuan, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, pointed out in his article "Accelerating the construction of green power to promote the energy industry revolution": "What is a green power system? Contrary to the traditional power system, the green power system will greatly weaken the electromechanical characteristics, strengthen the electromagnetic characteristics, green power system will be green power supply, green power grid, large capacity energy storage, high proportion of electrified load together, while showing the new characteristics of intelligence."

Green power supply includes wind power, photovoltaic, photothermal power generation and other main power supplies, as well as green thermal power, hydropower, nuclear power and other power supplies. Green power grid consists of transformers, converters, transmission and distribution lines, non-sulfur hexafluoride insulated switches/appliances, showing a trend of weak regulation and control capacity. Large-capacity energy storage refers to distributed pumped storage group. High proportion of electrification and randomness are the two major characteristics of load; intelligence means that power equipment, AI chips and IoT networks will be widely used.

Academician Pan Yuan pointed out four characteristics of green power system in his article:

1. Green power supply and green power grid;

2. Large capacity energy storage;

3. High proportion of electrified load;

4. Intelligent.

Two typical application scenarios of green power

Scene one:Integrated wisdom zero carbon power plant

On December 29, 2022, the State Power Investment Corporation's first comprehensive smart zero-carbon power plant to be dispatched by the power grid was put into trial operation in Suzhou, Jiangsu Province. The project has innovatively aggregated 49 sites of various resources, including 2 household energy storage, 3 commercial building energy storage and 1 distributed energy storage. In addition, there are 31 distributed photovoltaic, 2 industrial parks, charging piles and other resources. The total aggregated power load capacity will exceed 2.1GW, the peak capacity will be about 1.1GW, and the peak shaving resources will be about 1.3GW. And in terms of market application, the smart zero-carbon power plant project can participate in power demand response and power auxiliary services through virtual power plant technology, call resources, and in the future will explore participation in the power in stock market, auxiliary service market, green power and other trading models to achieve commercial operation.

Comprehensive intelligent zero-carbon power plant is a typical new scene of green power application. It is the collection and integration of various resources. Of course, each independent new energy power source and user, such as wind power, photovoltaic, photothermal power generation and other main power sources, as well as green thermal power, hydropower, nuclear power and other power sources, including the integration of user terminals such as intelligent zero-carbon power plant, constitute a new demand point for green power.

Scene two:New energy distribution station area

The station area generally refers to the power supply range of each transformer in the power system, which belongs to the distribution network link. The main function is to distribute the power in the transmission network to various users according to the voltage level through the distribution facilities. With the development of distributed photovoltaic projects throughout the country, distributed new energy power generation is being promoted and applied on a larger scale, but the capacity of the distribution network area is limited, which will hinder the further development of new energy. On the other hand, the large-scale access of new energy increases the volatility of power supply, and the quality of regional power supply is severely tested. From the user side, the gradual popularization and application of electric vehicles has also increased the randomness of the electricity load side, while the demand for the construction of charging facilities has increased greatly, and heavy overload may occur in the distribution network area, affecting the stability of the power grid operation. The balance adjustment of power between source and grid load is also the difficulty in the construction of new power system.

In addition, as the end of the power grid, the traditional distribution network area often old equipment, distribution network capacity transformation, the split of the power load will face a large investment. Energy storage facilities can effectively adjust and balance the power generation and load of new energy, and become one of the effective means to ensure the stable operation of the power system. The energy storage in the station can solve the problem of power quality in the station, improve the power supply capacity and reliability of the station, and at the same time participate in the power demand response according to the power grid operation plan, which plays the role of peak cutting and valley filling.

New demand of green power for transformer

Green power system itself needs supporting equipment should be green, environmental protection, low carbon. The three-dimensional wound core transformer, the three-dimensional wound core amorphous transformer and the open dry-type transformer in the green transformer have a large amount of material saving, energy saving and easy recovery, and have outstanding low-carbon properties. Due to the improvement of structure and technology, the weight of the three-dimensional wound core can be reduced by about 25% compared with the stacked core. Vegetable oil transformer in green transformer completely solves the damage that mineral oil transformer may cause to the environment, the carbon emission of natural ester insulating oil in the whole life cycle is only about 1.5 of that of traditional mineral oil. The silicone rubber transformer in green transformer only consumes 15% of the electricity of traditional transformer in production. After the transformer life cycle, all the materials in the transformer can be recovered, which has typical circular economy properties. Green transformer is the best choice for green power system.

Integrated smart zero carbon power plant is a typical application scenario of green power. Since it is a zero-carbon power plant, the supporting transformer must be a green transformer. Less solid waste in zero-carbon power plants is also one of the characteristics of zero-carbon power plants. In addition, zero-carbon power plants require high energy saving and high reliability for transformers. The several green transformers mentioned above have high energy saving and high reliability attributes.

New energy distribution station area, which is a new demand for distribution network developed by new energy power generation. That is, the distribution network can access a large number of new energy, including new energy vehicle charging, energy storage and so on. This requires that the transformer of the new energy distribution station area is not only green in itself, but also must have high reliability, can withstand high overload characteristics, and must also have high energy saving properties. The above-mentioned green transformers have the characteristics of strong anti-short-circuit ability, which can match the new energy station area better than the traditional transformer.

In the new infrastructure of our country, many fast-growing industries also put forward new demands for green power, and also put forward new demands for green transformers. The following table shows the demand for green transformers in typical industries.
